The Joomla Project and the legal entity Open Source Matters maintain a number of websites, including the joomla.org domain and subdomains, joomlacode.org and opensourcematters.org.

The Joomla Project, concerned about the rights of individuals, particularly with regard to automated processing, and in a desire for transparency with its users, has put in place a policy for covering all these processing operations, the purposes pursued by the latter as well as the means of action available to individuals so that they can best exercise their rights in plain English. To make this policy easy to find, we make it available in the footer of all pages of all our domains.

The current online version of this privacy policy is the only version that is enforceable during the entire period of use of the site and until a new version replaces it. What domains does this policy cover?

This policy covers domains which are owned and managed by the Joomla Project. As of this writing, this includes:

What information do we collect on our domains and how do we use them?

Personal data means any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (identifiable person); an identifiable person is a person who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to a name, identification number or to one or more elements specific to their physical, physiological, genetic, psychological, economic, cultural or social identity.

The personal information that may be collected on our domains are mainly used by us for the management of relations with you.

The personal information collected, processed and/or stored, with your consent, are the following:

    Your name, email, phone number, IP to allow us to answer your request. These data are sent by email to the Joomla Project and are stored in the servers of our mail hosting provider,  our web hosting provider, and backups.
  • opensourcematters.org / developer.joomla.org
    Your name and email to allow us to answer your request. These data are sent by email to the Joomla Project and are stored in the servers of our mail hosting provider. No data are stored in the hosting server of the sites.
• Newsletters
  • joomla.org, developer.joomla.org, extensions.joomla.org, magazine.joomla.org
    Your name, email and IP are collected and stored on our hosting provider’s servers, and backups are stored at Amazon services and/or hour hosting provider, in order to be able to send you by email news and information you subscribed to.

Privacy on specific Joomla sites

On some sites, including extensions.joomla.org, forum.joomla.org, docs.joomla.org, resources.joomla.org, volunteers.joomla.org, magazine.joomla.org, community.joomla.org, certification.joomla.org and showcase.joomla.org you will be asked to provide an email address when registering for an account.

• Forum.joomla.org - Joomla! Forum
  If you register at forum.joomla.org you can choose whether to allow other forum members to contact you by email or private messaging and the type of personal information that is available using your user profile. You can also opt to subscribe to specific forums or threads which means your email address will be used to send information when new posts are made. All emails from the forum site include a link that allows you to opt out from continued subscription to that thread or forum. Forum administrators may use your email address to contact you if necessary.
  Your IP address may be used to identify duplicate user accounts (which are forbidden under the forum rules).
  Cookies are used locally on users’ PC to store visitors' preferences and record past activity at a site in order to provide better service when visitors return to our site, such as indicating which threads you have read. You may modify your information and preferences by editing your user profile.
• extensions.joomla.org - Joomla! Extensions Directory
  If you register extensions at extensions.joomla.org, or as a provider at resources.joomla.org, you agree to separate terms of service that allows us to contact you in reference to your account.
  If you register as a user at extensions.joomla.org your IP address may be used to identify possible abuse of the reviewing and rating system.
• docs.joomla.org - Joomla! Documentation
  Should you choose to edit or create wiki pages at docs.joomla.org your identity is recorded and your username is viewable by those who look at the history of the pages you have worked on. Your IP address may be used to identify possible abuse and may be blocked if abuse is detected. On docs.joomla.org you can choose to allow other users to send you email. This feature can be disabled in your user profile. Wiki administrators may still use your email address to contact you if necessary. Your email address is not revealed when sending or receiving messages in this way.
• volunteers.joomla.org - Joomla! Volunteers Portal
  When registering at volunteers.joomla.org, if you are a member at any level of the Joomla Project, you will be asked to provide your postal address as it is a legal requirement for our register of members. Unless otherwise requested, your postal address is visible only to the Secretary of Open Source Matters, Inc. The Project may also from time to time use your address to send you promotional materials, should you not wish to receive these items, leave the related tick box unchecked.
  When registering on the Volunteers’ Portal, you agree to receive notifications from the Portal via email. As this is an essential part of the function of the portal this is mandatory for all users.
  When you are registered on the Volunteers’ Portal, we may from time to time seek your consent to share your Name and Email and Country with third-party providers.
• magazine.joomla.org - Joomla! Community Magazine
  Commenting features: your name, email address, and IP address will be recorded when you make a comment. This information will not be published or shared with any third parties.

  This website uses Analytics services from Google LLC. Google Analytics uses "cookies", which are stored on your computer, to help the website analyze how users use the site during their visit. The collected data (including your truncated IP address) is transmitted and stored on a server controlled by Google, located in the United States.
  Google will use this information about your use of the website to generate reports on website activity for website operators and to provide other services relating to website activity and internet usage. • reCAPTCHA
  Several of our domains (joomla.org, opensourcematters.org, developers.joomla.org) use Google LLC's reCAPTCHA service to protect submissions and prevent spam on the site. It checks if you are a person to prevent certain features of the website from being abused by spam bots.
  By filling out the forms using this plugin, you consent to sending your IP address and possibly other data required by Google for the reCAPTCHA service. Your data will be communicated to Google and used by their services. However, your IP address will first be truncated by Google in EU Member States - or in other states that are part of the European Economic Area agreement. In exceptional cases, your full IP address will be transmitted to a Google server in the United States and then subsequently truncated. Google will use this information to evaluate your use of this service. The IP address provided to reCAPTCHA through your browser will not be merged with any other Google data.

Other third party services

By visiting our websites, you agree that your browser will make a supplemental connection to our CDN (Content Delivery Network) vendor to load some of our template assets. Your IP address might be tracked by our web server and our CDN vendor’s servers, to grant you a regular navigation experience on our websites. 

Donations and Payments

If you make a financial contribution and/or payments to Joomla using the sites, your name, address and other information may be collected if you choose to create an account, but your credit card information is never stored on our sites. PayPal's privacy policy may be viewed here.

How long do we hold your data?

The Joomla Project will only hold your information for as long as is necessary or where you ask us to delete records we may delete it earlier.
The duration for which we retain your personal information will differ depending on the type of information and the reason why it was collected. However, in some cases personal information may be retained on a long term basis: for example, personal information that we need to retain for legal purposes will normally be retained for at least six years in accordance with usual commercial practice and regulatory requirements.

How do we store and secure your data?

The Joomla Project makes its best efforts to take all measures to ensure the protection, privacy and security of personal data transmitted by any Internet user, in compliance with the applicable legal regulations.
The Joomla Project employs a variety of technical and organisational measures to keep your personal information safe and to prevent unauthorised access to, or use, or disclosure of it. Unfortunately, no information transmission over the Internet is guaranteed 100% secure nor is any storage of information always 100% secure, but we do take all appropriate steps to protect the security of your personal information.  

Storage of your data

• The Joomla Content Delivery Network (CDN) is provided by:
  MaxCDN / StackPath LLC, whose registered office is located at 2021 McKinney Ave. - Suite 1100 - Dallas, TX 75201, United States. No personal data are transferred to StackPath or through the CDN.
• The Joomla Email accounts as well as any other services provided as part of G Suite subscription are provided through servers located in the United States by:
  Google LLC, whose  offices are located at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway - Mountain View, CA - United States.

How can you access, rectify and delete your data?

Each person has a right of access, rectification and opposition to their personal data. Each person also has the right to limit the processing of personal data relating to them, the right to dereference and the right to the portability of personal data that they have transmitted to the processor.

You can exercise this right by contacting our Data Protection Officer, who has overall responsibility for data protection compliance in our organisation, by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. All applications must indicate the email address where we can contact the applicant. The reply will be sent within one month of receipt of the request. This one-month period may be extended by two months if the complexity of the application and/or the number of applications so require.

If you subscribed to our newsletters, an unsubscribe link is available in each of the e-mailings sent by the Joomla Project.

What can be the other uses of my data?

Recognition

The Joomla Project is a 100% volunteer driven project. Giving recognition to its contributors is important for the project. Therefore, any contributor to Joomla allows and implicitly consents to the Joomla Project to mention their full name throughout the Joomla domains for recognition purpose.

Transfer of your data

With the exception mentioned previously,  we do not share your information with third parties. On some sites, we use third-party advertising companies to serve ads when you visit our domains. These companies may use anonymous information (not including your name, address email address or phone number) about your visits to our domains in order to provide advertisements about goods and services of interest to you. Your information may be disclosed when we are legally required to by an United States court order, to verify or enforce compliance with the policies governing our website and applicable laws, or to protect against misuse or unauthorized use of our website

Linking with third party sites

Joomla websites may contain links to and from other websites.  If you follow a link to any of these websites, please note that these websites have their own privacy policies and they will be a data controller of your personal information. The Joomla Project does not accept any responsibility or liability for these policies and you should check these policies before you submit any personal information to these websites.

In addition, if you linked to a Joomla website from a third-party site, the Joomla Project cannot be responsible for the privacy policies and practices of the owners or operators of that third-party site and recommend that you check the policy of that third party site and contact its owner or operator if you have any concerns or questions.

Children's Privacy

Protecting the privacy of the very young is especially important. None of of our websites are structured specifically to attract anyone under 13.
We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13 or the age as specified by the data subject's governing laws. What is the applicable law?

The present conditions of use of our domains are governed by the WP29 law and subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of the Joomla Project's registered office, subject to a specific attribution of jurisdiction arising from a particular legal or regulatory text.
